Compute the cosine of the phase angle between the voltage and current waveforms as seen by the motor. You do this with Analog to Digital converters.

 

Or to put it another way ........
Use a 2-Channel Oscilloscope with one Channel showing Voltage, and one Channel showing Current.

Or measure the true power with a wattmeter, then measure the volts and amps drawn and take the ratio.

Measuring current can be dangerous if the motor is powered from the mains.
A current transformer can be safely used for that.

The easiest way is to use a wattmeter such as the Kill-A-Watt.
It directly measures current, voltage, and power factor, as well as watts.
