We use clamp on ammeters here at my job. AC only is cheaper, but we also have AC and DC units.

There are also oscilloscope clamp on probes that measure current and produce a voltage.

Hi
I need to measure the current through a device but cannot connect an ammeter in series with it.
Is there anyway to measure it?
Is it powered by a switch or transistor? With the switch or transistor off measure across the transistor orb switch with the amp meter.

Yes, look into hall effect sensors. There are commercially available clamp-on current meters.
Note: This will require that you clamp it around only one of the 2 power conductors.. So if its got a cord/cable with all wires bundled in it and no way to access a single cable only then you might be out of luck..

But more information on this device (its construction and wiring) should allow better answers..
