Hi Everyone,

I am designing a circuit in which I intend to use the IRM-60-12, a Mean Well 60W 12V AC/DC converter. The datasheet states that the input requirement is 85-305V AC and 47-440Hz. It has built-in EMI circuitry and a bridge rectifier. My two basic questions are:

1. The input specified is Line-to-Neutral. Is it possible to connect it with Line-to-Line as per the American standard, which is 220V L-L?
2. If I connect a bridge rectifier (for some purpose) at the input, will it still operate as specified in the datasheet?

Currently in much of the USA you will find the line to line voltage closer to 240 volts, except in those areas where it is the line-to-line connection to three-phase, where it will be closer to 208 volts. THAT should work with the Mean Well supply.
But if you connect a bridge rectifier to supply it with a rectified AC input the switch-mode supply will probably not function correctly ever again. So I suggest not trying that if it matters that the supply should work.

1) Yes, it doesn't need the neutral to be at earth potential. It will work from any AC supply where the voltage between the two wires is between 85V and 305V.
2) That one's a "maybe". Quite a number of Meanwell supplies in the IRM range WILL work from DC inputs, and it specifies a DC supply voltage in the datasheet. In virtually every switched-mode supply I have ever used the first component after the input pins is a bridge rectifier, so my guess is that it would work.
However, you really should interpret the lack of a DC spec as meaning that it won't work off DC, but if you need to use a DC input, it would be well worthwhile asking Meanwell if that is the case, or if the DC spec was simply missing.
Or alternatively, you could try it, but be prepared to sacrifice a power supply if my guess is wrong! And connect it up with a suitable value fuse just in case.

Thank You for the information. Actually there IRM-90 series work well with both AC and DC voltages.
