Anyone running a MC-2100 with original motor?, if so is the tach signal necessary to run when used in a secondary application? or is it just for console indicator?
If it is needed, what is the nature of it and the resolution, as far as I can tell it is a reed switch sensor.

From what I have gathered on the web and from your post, It appears the sensor is just for indication on the console, not feedback to the motor.
BTW how are you controlling it presently, from one of the PWM circuits on the web?

I'm planning to use a reed switch like that as feedback for my motor controller. But I'm starting to consider that poor resolution. I have other treadmills models which use them, but do they really serve as feedback mechanism?

The PWM command signal goes from the opto out direct to the processor IC.
It has been reverse engineered as 50ms duration.
