Many years ago, a MSEE had a dispute with a bureaucrat in local or state government. The bureaucrat wouldn't listen to the MSEE on an issue because he didn't have an FCC license. So he came to my original site and noticed some technical errors in the test and reported them to me. Well, I corrected the test and devoted a page for each question with an ambiguity, and what I changed to clarify the question or answers.
He took two weeks, then sat for his exams, all of the commercial elements, to alleviate any shortcomings of the bureaucrat.
All the certifications do is recognize a specific skill set according to the established standards.
It gives comfort to those you deal with. Not every MSEE is from MIT. The internet diploma mill is alive and well. The certifications are universally recognized and traceable.
