Lynn Conway who substantially changed how microchips were made died today. Her name would have been better known except she was a transgendered woman. Hmm, sounds like someone I know.

Amazing individual.
I studied the "Introduction to VLSI systems" book by Mead & Conway in a UCLA night class many years ago while working at Aerojet.
Didn't know anything about her at the time, other than she was a co-author of the book.

This Wikipedia article details her many accomplishments, which really helped advance computer design as well as VLSI chip design and fabrication at the time.
