A quick look for a data sheet turned up that Mouser have 285 in stock.

In most cases - an SMPSU chip will have the same "base number", or not even close.

I am not looking for a different supplier, I am looking for a different IC which is less expensive than the MP2496M

It looks like it is a dedicated SMPS chip for an USB charger port:
