Looking for help on circuit design. 5V regulator heating up (I think)

The good news is that probably most of the noise from the steppers will stay on the 12 volt side of the regulator. But you will need a filter capacitor on the 5 volt side of the regulator. The value of that capacitor will depend on the noise level and I am not able to comment on that. But it may be specifier in the device data sheet.
