I am assuming you mean the wiring circuitry, rather that device design etc?
If the former, check out the various manuf. manuals for any particular sized VFD and they will often include necessary control and protection device examples.
Also obtain a copy of NFPA79, there was a copy out there in PDF at one point.
Your particular Country of Origin may specify certain regulations etc.
The actual control of the VFD is generally through its PLC I/O , typically 24vdc, where the 24v supply is provided by the unit.
