The bulb is just a resistance wire coiled up, as the bulb heats up its resistance increases, limiting its own current, whereas an led is a silicon diode that needs a limited current.

The resistivity of the tungsten wire used for the bulb filament increases with temperature. It is a fundamental physical property of tungsten.
The gas (if used) excludes oxygen so that the wire doesn't burn.
