Fun maybe, but I'd be concerned about the safety aspect. Wouldn't a scanning laser able to detect a 2mm target at 6m range have enough power to damage human eyesight, should someone inadvertently look towards the source?

Good question.
It has supposed safety features to turn off if it detects a large object, but has not yet been certified as safe by an independent agency.

Very long I would think.
It's generally very difficult to reprogram a dedicated µP in such a device.
