I've gotten remote cars that have steering, forward and reverse all installed, preferably with shocks, then ripped out all the radio stuff, added H-Bridge drivers and used those outdoor base for robots.

Not sure if they are as common in your area as they are here. They cost between $20 and $100 here, depending on the suspension and speed. Nicer ones are available, but you end up with BLDC motors, which need a different controller, or you only talk in R/C servo language to them (the highest end, and most expensive).
