What exactly do you mean by "intuition"? Do you mean "intention" perhaps?

A VNA (Vector Network Analyzer) performs a basic task: set an internal frequency, send a CW tone on this frequency through its front connection, where your device under test (DUT) is connected, and immediately switch to a receiver mode to measure the reaction of the DUT to this CW tone (measuring the reflected signal back to the VNA). Then, set its internal frequency to the next step, rinse and repeat. In the meantime, it plots on a screen the values of the reflected signal.

If there are more channels on the VNA, different types of measurements can be done, such as Bode plots.

In order to perform these measurements accurately and account for the contributions of parts such as cables and connectors, as well as compensate for variations in temperature, its system must be constantly checked through the use of what is commonly called a calibration kit (well known good references of impedances such as 50Ω, 0Ω or infinite ohms).

The documents below can help understand VNAs, their operation and applications.

On a VNA the intermediate frequency (IF) can be adjusted to improve signal floor at the expense of the speed of measurement. This is similar to a Spectrum Analyzer

Naturally, its adjustment parameters and range depend on the equipment used, therefore always check the user's manual of the equipment you use. You would also need to be aware that noise floor is directly related to the quality of construction of the equipment itself.

Is there an over-arching problem you are trying to solve, or is this simple curiosity?
