I have ORCAD 16.6. PSPICE stuff is mentioned but I can't get anything to run but the main PSPICE program. No *.DAT files. Do I just have the stripped down free version without PSPICE?

I don't use Orcad now but it is Pspice compatible. Orcad has its own file format. You probably need to import the pspice file to convert it.

I have been to the Cadence web and downloaded PSPICE (I thought). I'm still struggling with it.
I don't have any particular reason to use such software. It is just one of those things on my retirement list.

Yes orcad is pspice compatible. I think it is pretty easy to use.
You can launch "Capture" and open any sample design shipped along with.
It should be located at - <install>/tools/pspice/capture_samples/anasim/example
Just open the design and hit the simulation button.
You can further edit the design to simulate your own circuit.

I think I may need to reload my orcad.
