I connected two 9 volt batteries to make 18 volts and they started swelling and heating up?

I've combined batteries before with no problems at all.
I wired the two 9 volts exactly like this: (the 18 volt part)

After I wired, I hooked it up to a light to test if the two were sending power.
It was sending power, however one of the bottoms of the batteries swelled and they both got really hot.
I checked all the wires and connections and everything was in order.
Did I do something wrong???

What light did you connect?
It was probably drawing too much current from the batteries.
There is no problem with series connecting batteries like that.
