Hurricane Irma

As of this morning Florida seems to be directly in the path from south to north. The only question seemed to be will it be a category 4 or 5 when it makes landfall. Memories of Humphrey Bogart, Edward G. Robinson and Lauren Bacall at the Largo Hotel in the classic Key Largo movie. Those of you down there choosing to "ride it out" try and stay safe and hang tight. Things could get real ugly.

Not much left of the station today.

Over all my years working within the NAVAIR and NAVSEA communities it is amazing how many bases or air stations no longer exist. Funny because after leaving those communities I wasn't aware half of them closed. A few years ago a friend sent me photographs of the US Naval Base Subic Bay and the adjoining area NAS (Naval Air Station) Cubi Point. Life was sweet right till the volcano. I also spent considerable time at the NSA Naples, Italy and I was at the airport in Capodichino. Most if not all of that is now gone with most support comming out of Rhota,Spain. Hell, my son Michael was born at NSA, Naples. Even many of the US bases and facilities are gone, places like El Toro or NAS Miramar. Oh well some pretty sweet memories. :)

Some closed because of calamities like Homestead AFB in Florida from Hurricane Andrew. That was our primary evacuation point back then.

Lets hope the damage is NOT on the Hurricane Andrew level.

Yeah, I remember that on well. I also remember anytime a hurricane or typhoon was approaching if it could fly it was gone. It was so weird to be at an air facility during an approaching storm and see no aircraft less of course a few tied down hangar queens. Some facilities were gobbled up by hurricanes and typhoons and others gave in to other natural disasters like volcanoes.

I was just down in Florida this summer and I finally got to remove the NAVAIR museum from my bucket list. While Irma can prove to be a bitch let's hope the destruction is minimal.

Hang tight Joey as this is going to be a rough ride. Irma is big and she is ugly. No longer a question of if it hits Florida but when and how much destruction it will pack. Thinking about everyone down there as Houston slowly dries out to begin recovery. Try and stay safe....

Invoking the “Baker Act” — a law that enables authorities to institutionalize patients who present a danger to themselves or others — is not something law enforcement does lightly, but officers detained at least six people by Friday afternoon. Under the law, they can be held up to 72 hours before the state would have to go to court to prolong their detention.
The track is still shifting west. Get ready!

The track has moved considerably west of us. If it holds, we'll likely see sustained tropical storm force winds with hurricane force gusts.

It's going to be messy, but not the utter destruction I thought for the last few days was going to happen.

On the other hand, my friends to the west are now experiencing the sheer horror I felt the past two days.

It's not so much dread of the storm itself, but the knowledge of what the aftermath will be like.

Been there, done that. Not like camping at all -- regardless of what you may have heard.

My weather hat says the storm keeps moving west and it misses most of Florida and hits Mobile Alabama at category 2 or 3.

There has not been a significant high pressure system to the west to move it north and plenty of warm water if it keeps moving west. I don't understand the driving force for the sudden left turn that everyone is predicting.

I would agree with them if the storm was closer to the mainland to be pulled up the coast by the warm water instead of driving up the peninsula (really unlikely based on history). If hurricane Harvey would have cooled off more of the gulf, the argument of the hurricane seeking warm water. Now, I agree with your links (using old data) that the hurricane is seeking warm water. But, the warm water they are following is in the gulf. The gulf has stayed warm in the Florida west coast to New Orleans. There is also no high pressure system to be found south of Minnesota. It will only curve North when it hits the water cold by Harvey and a bit of help from the Coreolis effect.

I've got a three dollar bet with a friend. We'll see.

Give you a tip for when storing the generator after ward. Add some "Sta-bil" to the gas in the tank and run it for a while, to get the mixed gas into the carb. Always had the same carb problems with my snowblower and chainsaws until I started using it. One of the few gas treatments that works as advertised.

Good tip, +1.
But be advised sta-bil will not work forever. You need to run a tank of gas through it every year. Don't expect it to work after sitting at the back of the garage for 6 years, just because you put sta-bil in it.

Time will tell. I won't even try to predict the path.

At 11:00 pm Friday, the hurricane hunter plane just announced the storm is strengthening as it crosses into Cuba (normally gets weaker as it nears land). The storm could be grabbing humidity from the far side of Cuba and "pull" itself across the island and into the gulf.

Also, the waters at Key West are at Record highs 88 F. No reason to turn until further west where the water is cooler. Let's see, does she turn left sooner or later?
