Power bill? I have an electric heater computer rack (less peak power than a conventional electric heater) for the 2 car garage. It get's cold here. In the summer I use solar power to keep the critical system UPS charged. The computer rack is the primary load for my solar energy bank.
Upgrading the server farm/cooling off-grid system with another 800W of panels. Ground testing 4 panels before being mounted.

Now I need to upgrade the 12vdc backbone to a much larger gauge wire. The losses are horrible.

Loads off, just recharging the battery bank.

I've had nothing but good with this series DL380 and DL360 up the GEN9 on the surplus market.

After 5 years it's time to refresh the main server rack redundant UPS system battery. For servers with redundant power supplies there are individual UPS systems for each power supply. All other networking and systems on the rack are powered from one or the other UPS for load leveling.
This guy is online with the full load while the other UPS is getting serviced with new batteries and cooling fans.

My two sons are going to do the room terminations. It's Miller Time for me.

The workstation netboots the Linux OS so the local drive is just a cache and backup area. After a few adjustment to the xorg.conf video (the new server changed the screen number order and ID's) file all is back to normal.

@nsaspook,

I've decided I want one of these servers.

Tell me what to buy (used), and what dangers lurk.
The size and possible fan noise is the major things needed to plan for.
I would get the DL380 2U version as they tend to be less noisy and easier to work on with more space inside.

Example for lower end:
https://www.amazon.com/DL380-Gen9-R...=1723232599&sprefix=dl380+gen9,aps,183&sr=8-4

You can load, boot and using the internal video but it's server mode monitor level performance. A cheap GT 1030 will all you to run most desktop graphic systems like KDE/Plasma. Use the RAID controller to make one logical RAID60 (if you have 8 physical drives) drive.
https://www.techopedia.com/definition/30720/raid-60.

Linux should install quickly out of the box but there are quirks with the needed non-free firmware for the network cards (they work but not a full capability without the added firmware) and for the NVIDIA GT-1030 if that's in a first-time booted system.
