Helene hasn't even made landfall on the other side of the big peninsula and it's already blowing pretty good here on the Georgia Coast! Batten the hatches boys we're in for a blow!

Naah. They don't need an excuse.
Just saying insurance companies don't need an excuse to raise rates. In California (I hear) insurance companies are moving out of the state because wild fires are costing them so much in insurance claims. Some insurance companies (I hear) have been raising rates across the board to cover for their losses in high fire danger zones.

Who do you think is the most powerful?
A) Big Oil?
B) Big Banking?
C) Big Health Care?
D) Big Pharma?
E) Big Insurance?

If you choose anything other than insurance guess again. Oil, Banking, Health Care and Pharma all need insurance. So insurance can influence prices just about everywhere you look. And they don't need an excuse to raise rates. Sure, statistics influence the rates, but when stat's show a drop in overall cost you never see insurance rates going down. At least that's been my observation. When was the last time insurance issued a rebate?

A curious thing I noticed in some of the pictures showing severe storm damage to houses, is that the some on stilts in the neighborhood seem to have suffered little damage (below from The Weather Channel).
Apparently being on stilts allows the wind to more easily flow around the house, causing less wind pressure.
Or perhaps they avoided damage from the storm water surge.

Correct, they don't need an excuse, they have reasons.

Our modern building codes are such that there is almost no direct wind damage except in the strongest ( high cat 4 and above) storms.

Water is the biggest problem, followed by falling trees and debris.

One of the reasons our insurance rates are so high in general is that those with the greatest exposure (i.e. beach houses) do not pay premiums commensurate with the risk.

If they did, those properties would be unmarketable.

Holey Moley that WAS more than a bit of a blow. Right after the last post we lost power and winds got up to 100MPH gusts! After 4 days we finally have power again! Tree uprooted and took out the 3 phase HI Line in front of the house including the pole with our feed transformer. Outtastate contractors repoled and restrung the line yesterday but miss wired our feed transformer and GA Power had us down as with power. Took a bunch of calls to get it fixed! High on the list before next one is a generator! We have a tiny one that just barely kept the fridge cold but nothing else other than small electrics. Plus, Verizon was out! At least the landline came back after a day down.

lost a shed was only real damage other than power loss

Surprisingly we were able to squeak out to find water and ice.

Glad you're back. Glad you're safe. Good plan for the next big blow (generator). In an area that is subject to the possibility of tropical or hurricane storms, a good whole home gen is a good idea for sure. Hope you're high enough above sea level so you don't have to worry about storm surge.
