How's the weather?

We've had what the news is calling "Monsoon" weather. Humidity is higher than typical. Typical humidity is somewhere around 5 to 25%. When we get above that it's a monsoon I guess. Our humidity has been around 45% and the swamper just doesn't cool all that much.

Ten years ago I had a new furnace installed. During installation I had them put a refrigeration coil in so that if the prevailing weather pattern were to change it wouldn't be that big an expense to upgrade to AC. Lately we've been thinking about just that.

Did an addition over the garage. Took out an old gas fired furnace and replaced it with a Split Phase Heat/AC unit with two heads. A 1 ton for the garage and a 2 ton for the space above. Roughly 550 square feet. Today I hope to be hanging sheetrock on the ceiling so I can then insulate that space. Once insulated it should be fine. However, the humidity and the lack of overhead insulation will make the job even warmer and more uncomfortable, though I DO have working AC in that space.

How's the weather? Likely too hot to be doing what needs to be done - but what needs to be done needs doing. And permits don't last forever. Gotta get this done for final inspection. Fortunately I do have a couple months yet.

Down here we use heat pumps. I originally installed a water-cooled unit that used my 70° well water for heat exchange instead of ambient air temp. Worked great until a pipe burst due to vibration fatigue and flooded the house. Now using standard heat pumps. Was supposed to use a ground loop of pumped glycol but living out here on the marsh I used single pass well water discharged into the drainage ditch to the marsh beside the house. Was a favorite spot for my Lab to get a cool drink of water in the hot summertime. Also have electric heat strips but they almost never kick in due to rare freezing conditions here.

rare freezing conditions
We get snow and ice. But lately it's been more and more "Less" snow and ice. It's becoming a rare condition in these neck of the woods (or desert actually). Altitude at my driveway is 4550 feet. All week we've been forecasted for thunder showers. I think so far we've had 0.150" of rain fall from all these terrible storms that never materialize.

Cereal crops are beginning to come in from our prairie provinces and yields are very low. Cattle ranchers are reducing their herd size as feed prices continue to climb. We are back into another hot spell.

Wet, really wet. We had some severe thunder storms come through NE Ohio. I almost became owner of a neighbors tent, it made it partially over the fence. :) Large scale power outages but we never lost power and have a generator if we do, even enough power for the neighbors. We did lose cable and cable phone and Internet so I am using my little MiFi and cellular data at the moment. Areas around us really got hammered but in our area not that bad. Went to OTA (Over The Air) TV. They say several hours and things will be restored. Tues, Wed and Thurs called for rain and it has been hot and humid. Saturday looks good so maybe I'll get out to the rifle range. Nice to have backup stuff. Anyway in a word the weather simply sucks. OTA TV is interesting. :)

If someone has trouble, starting a camp fire in Phoenix this summer, you really need to take a remedial scouting course.

If anyone in the Ohio River Valley has trouble growing grass this summer, needs to read the instructions on their Scott's Fertilizer bag.

If anyone from Florida or Texas didn't catch Covid this summer, congratulations and tell your neighbor to get vaccinated.

Thunder storms with power outages continue this morning but as of now (about 11:00 DST) seem to be moving out to the east. Power outages all around us but our generator sits idle which is nice. Cable service came back around midnight and this mornings storms had very light winds. They are calling for more later this afternoon so till then it looks nice and clear. :) Well won't have to water the lawn and glad I recently over seeded. :) Still over 80K residences in the dark in Cuyahoga County in the Greater Cleveland suburbs. Many since yesterday afternoon and it seems as quick as power is restored more outages happen.

Yes. We have a large grain terminal and is not looking promising for exports. It is very slow.
