How would a 8 bit flash converter work?

My first waveform digitizer I built used a TRW TDC1007 8-bit 20MHz flash ADC. You could fry an egg on it, it got so hot.

An incoming analog signal is presented to a resistor divider network and a group comparators. The comparator outputs are then sent to a priority encoder.
