The first step in successful troubleshooting is to understand how the device is supposed to function, and then the second step is to learn how it actually IS functioning. THEN it is usually possible, by examining the device circuit, to see where the problem would most likely be located. At that point you should be able to use test equipment to find the specific failed element.
