How to make a series-wound motor reversible?

I've found back then that when a starter wouldn't turn over you just needed to rap on it with a screwdriver handle a few times. That would usually knock dirt out from the brushes and it would usually work. Another "Bang-on-it" trick was when my carburetor float stuck open and began flooding the engine with fuel. Wrap on the bowl and that would usually dislodge the valve and close it. But that just meant you were going to be doing a carb rebuild soon. I never reworked a starter though.
Back in the 50s and 60s that’s the way I got my television to work.
 
Thank you all for the helpful responses. I ended up making two more terminals to reverse the windings relative to armature. It took some careful drilling, insulating and soldering, but the motor is now reversible. With even a single solenoid.
Did you ever find a supplier for a new motor or even a Used motor. the brushs coming from the back are an unusual shape. Did you find any place to order new brushes? Did you wire the motor as a series wound
motor or a shunted motor? And could you please send a schematic of how you did the wiring And maybe some pictures because I think I may be doing the same thing.

You need to get hold of an older DC motors text, 1940's vintage, before all of the modern stuff. That will cover how to reverse motors.
The 'Bible' on motor technology is 'Electric Motor Repair ' by Robert Rosenberg, original printing , 1946. !

Theexact scheme for reversing a two-pole DC motor is obvious, but for a four pole motor suddenly it becomes a lot more complex. For a series wound motor, at least.
