I have a laptop hp 8440p and it has this cable with 3 wires inside.
I want to make it work with a regular lab PSU, but it has + and. - only, where do I connect the third cable?

To the power management system inside the brick.

HP designs it’s laptops so they require a HP power supply. Nothing else work and the laptop won’t power up or will shut down.

i tried generic laptop power brick and it works, it does not have to be original.
surely there is a workaround
Surprising, but I’m not curious enough to investigate. I bought HP laptops for my company for around 10-20 years. They would shut down if the laptop model didn’t match the power brick.
