Perhaps start with a crystal radio?

The "QRM Coil" described in "HB-17 - making the coil for the trap" works very well as the basis of a crystal set. Just add the tuning cap and a diode (or cats-whisker detector).

Your project is impractical. It would take you years to get to the knowledge level necessary. Sorry I can't help more.

Prove him wrong, however what everyone has said is relatively true RTL SDR is a good place to start. I have also gone down the rabbit hole of how much of the spectrum can you pick up with a reciever. Its far more complex an order than most give it credit for. I was personally dejected when I wanted to look around the spectrum into ultra low and ultra high frequencies and couldn't find kit to go as far as I wanted to. good luck this is a great place to start. I have learned ton poking around here.
