I am 23. Have been taking my toys apart since I was 4. I always got into trouble for unscrewing every appliance in the house. What was the object of doing this? To see what the heck is inside.

I was not always interested in electronics, but always liked technical things. I guess it was the radio shack 300 in one electronics lab kit that my uncle bought me at 13 (still have it!!!) which subconsciously got me interested.

When I was in high school I took a basic electricity course which did not teach theory, but they taught us how to solder and we took various appliances apart and etc. It was around then that I began reading some books on electricity and became more and more interested daily. By the 12th grade I knew that I wanted to go into electrical engineering.

Now I am a junior in electrical engineering at the University of Pittsburgh.

 

Anyone in electronics who hasn't got a couple of projects building and more still on the computer isn't obsessive enough to be successful.

I totally agree. You have to love it and live it.

I'm 21 years old and I'm currently starting to get really into it. I do have some knowledge under my belt since I'm studying for a dual major in Computer Engineering and Computer Science, but I haven't really done any projects on my own that were too difficult.

Right now I'm reading all the volumes I can on this site and doing all the worksheets... I guess I just really like learning new things and this stuff really fascinates me. I just hope one day I can become as talented as these people on the forums.

Oh well, enough about me. Back to work!

 

I am 15 years old. Although I am quite young, I intend to discern as much as I can from electronics. I've made it very clear to myself that I will only do it for the benefit of others. I thank all of you for your contributions, they have been very helpful. As for my short history, I was always fascinated with the works of various inventors, several of which I read about. When I discovered my fascination for electronics, I was ten years of age. I owe much of who I am to my grandfather, who taught me about electronics, in addition to amateur radio.

 

52 started when in 3rd grade with an Hallicrafters sx-42. started learning code on a tape machine. It was a reel to reel code practice machine. It had a paper roll on it with holes in the reel. As it turned when the holes passed by a spring loaded piece,would drop in the hole make contact with a piece of metal and then make the noise for a dot or a dash. at age 15 took an electronics course in high school at age 16 -17 got my am broadcasting license(permit) they called it. I never could get a job at a radio station so thats when the fun began. I built my own pirate station(s) using tubes. I ate and slept electronics. I finally decided to get an aa degree in electronics and a ham radio license. I stuck with the advance license as you cannot get one anymore. I am sure they will bump me up to extra. I did have to pass the code test. I am sure I could pass the code for extra if it was needed anymore. I am doing some code at 30-35 words per minute. Not real proficient yet but I practice everyday. So I guess I have about 43 years of experimenting.

im currently 34 yrs old, my first experiences with electronics came at a much younger age of around 6, maybe 7 .... using/programming the TRS-80 HOME computer by radio shack! come now, i kno u all remember that ancient piece there.
starting interest in programming as i upgraded to the c64 to the c128, still wasn't enuff to satisfy my urge to learn, i enroll'd into multi programming courses of study, including COBAL, C++, windows & more in high school. so i graduated in '94, seeing that everytime i learn'd enuff info on the OS, it was being switch'd to a whole new OS ... so i turn'd in perspectives my senior year, decided i want to build!
put money down, to hold my spot at DeVry inst... after graduation ... by the time the next semester started ... i had gotten a job in a plastics factory .... seeing the 'money NOW' had an effect on me, steering me away from devry ... big mistake.
anyhow, wuz 19 at graduation, by age 22 .... became an accessory in a high speed auto crash, leaving me comatose.... after which i attempted to continue my career in the plastics field, as i had previously work'd my way up to 'set-up' & 'die set' ...
but anyhow, now i sit, all broken hearted, living the life of disability :c(
been broke-down, so to speak, for a little over 5 yrs now ... getting board w/ my gov'ment salary, i want more....
true it were, i was extremely lucky, in rehabilitation ... guess 1/4 of my brain dead, so i heard previously spoken .... nothing much wrong with me, except a limp, from a broken femur i should have never 'felt' ....
now im gaining interest in going back to school, learning more of my love ... and hopefully a better life 4 my wife and 2 sons!
lets just hope that AFTER 2012, computers might still be availible to the public!!!!! anyhow, thats drubies story ... hope yall can recognize ............. PEACE

 

53 this year. Think it was grade two that I got an electric train set for Christmas, and took it apart the day after. Tried to connect the parents phono to my guitar amp when I was 10. That only succeded in a nasty 60hz hum.

Age of 12 I bought my first photographics development kit and proceeded to destroy the parents negative collection.

Rebuilt my first car by age 17, with only a small box of parts left over.

Started in Millwrighting (industrial mechanic) and jman'd in '79. Worked manufacturing for a bunch of years. Supervising trades early 80's. Couldn't find too many competent electronics guys, so despite union complaints I took up the challange.

Bought my first computor in 85', IBM PC. Hand wired my first computor system shortly after (6502). O'scope and Macro assembler for Dos mid 80's.

Suddenly, twenty five years of working passes by. where'd that go?

Last few years in oil patch working on electric VFD topdrives. Offered electrical apprenticeship and now in 4th year.

Where to now is anyones guess.

 

Age is not the question,the question is when or if you have ever had

Even some ceo's don't have the whole
picture of what he is working on.So where do you find your self.I am looking in the past for things that have been missed.

I agree. I am often impressed with the experience level of some "whippersnappers." Keeps me on my toes!

On the other hand....a lot of us old geezers have a lot to offer. People keep talking about age discrimination...but I sure haven't seen it yet. I keep getting more work than I know what to do with every day....can't even THINK about retiring!

Never met him, but he's well known at North Pole High School, where my kids have all attended.

I'm 49, been making a living in component-level electronic repair for 28 years. In the past 9 years, I do less and less component-level repair and more and more system/computer/network/phone system work.

Been a licensed ham operator since age 14 (35 years). Earned my First Class FCC license at 19, attended numerous industry training classes over the years. Took and passed tests for the Senior Journeyman CETsr in 2006 with combined scores of 94.5%.

I THEN went back to school and earned an ASEET, graduated this June with Honors (3.94 GPA - old people can learn too, ya know!)

Not sure if I will pursue an associates in networking/windows ("Networking Specialist") or pursue a BS or BA. Pros and cons to both paths in this economy and at my age.
