I've got a set of sockets (for 3/8" through 1-1/4" American bolts) for 1/2" drive and a couple of 15" torque bars.

Everything is almost new and I would like to sell them. I'm familiar with Craigslist, EBay, etc., but I've never sold anything. Other than cash, specifically how does the buyer pay me for used items?

Has anyone used Pay Pal to get paid for something you've sold out of your garage? I don't want to hand off these rather expensive items and get paid through some unreputable money exchange.

For a face-to-face transaction, cash is king. I've bought snd sold everything from cars and motorcycles to a $5 video card and cash was used in all but one transaction. Be careful with cashiers checks. All kinds of schemes and fakes out there. Call the issuing bank to validate.

Why do you want to avoid cash?

Glenn.....do you live near any population? Just my take. PayPal works fine (only give them one account source). Getting paid ain't the problem.......shipping is the crap part.

For what you got....put an ad in local craig's list and the thrifty nickle. Do they still have those? Haven't seen one lately.

Some AM stations still have a "trading post" on the weekends. Some thru-out the week.

Sell local for cash.

Don't expect to get much for them. Used tools new or otherwise don't sell for much. If you can get 10 20% of new price for a set consider it good.

As for Paypal I use it pretty often and have never had trouble getting paid through them The only down side is the typical 2 - 3 day wait before I can transfer funds from them to my bank.

Why would you want to sell common size sets hand tools anyway?

I get paid through paypal. There are others and they all have similar rules for percentage, transaction fees, and how long before the money is in your account.

I don't know what four square charges, but it is a way you can accept credit cards using a phone app. They will send you a card reader as well.

For all eBay stuff I use PayPal. They take a cut, but it's worth it to eliminate all the other hassles.

For craigslist it's strictly cash.

For tools, I'd probably try craigslist first. There should be a local market for tools, they're heavy to ship, and if I was buying tools I'd want to see them up close.

You might consider whether you have relatives or friends that could use the tools. I don't think you'll get anywhere near replacement cost for the tools and it may make more sense to keep them in the family.

Most banks today support free personal payments via smartphone. I find it quite convenient.
I agree. I use it whenever possible. But for buying something in person, I always use cash. Waving the cash under the nose of the seller - literally - is usually good for a 10% discount or more. People just can't resist a handful of cash right in front of them.
