I was just out building a containment area for a petting zoo.

It was 122deg F coming off the asphalt (millings)

It is amaizing how quickly the body uses up its coolant supply in these temperatures.

I tried to do an hour long chunk of work, so I drank about 32oz of Gatorade about 15 minutes before getting stated. I stopped sweating after 50 minutes or so.

If you stop sweating, thats bad...

This weather is a kick in the power bill, for sure.

Hopefully our PoCo did a good job converting us to a 'Smart' grid.

Load transferring is 'posta be seamless. I have not seen any momentary loss of power or anything, so all seems good.

If the coal fired power plants arn't cranking out enough power, we will throw a few Canadians in there to get things moving.

 

Hot in Canada? I had to check and my forecast says 20 degrees for Nova Scotia, that's not even as warm as the UK. (That's about 70 degrees in the old system).

Maybe we are used to colder weather but that was unpleasant.

Remember this is in Celcius. Americans might sometimes think that the temperature drops 80 degrees Fahrenheit at the border just because it is Canada.

How smart would the person with solar panels on their roof look if there was a heat wave and they were the only one on the block with air conditioning during a heatwave and blackout?

 

Of course they would have to be compared to the guy the next block over that kept a generator running to power his Air.

We (my brother and I) made a "safe room" for the elderly and others who want it or can be medically affected by heat.

A window unit that has a UPS system, what is charged from solar.

If the power goes out in these temperatures, the elderly are VERY susceptible to heat-related problems/death.

So even if they had central air or window units all over the house, this would give them one room whose window AC is battery powered. MEANWELL makes pretty inexpensive chargers that use solar or grid power to charge the batteries, then monitor the grid.

When the grid is lost, it supplies 2 gfci outlets with the battery OR solar. If the solar is providing enough amperage and voltage for the load, it will use the solar. If that starts to drop, it switches to the batteries. So even at night, they are safe.

And depending on where they live, or what the typical down time of the grid, they can choose how large of a bank they would like/need.

Now that window units are pretty darn efficient, and cheap, this can be completely done including install for under $1,000us for a three hour backup.

That only operates a 5000btu unit, but that will keep a 12x12 room cool until help arrives or power is restored. Even if the room is larger, it will cool it WELL below the outdoor oven temps.

 

I just ran a test of a 5200btu unit on my system. It works but will kill the battery in about a hour. Looks like I need about 600W to run a AC just on solar power.

Lennox, the air conditioner company, is offering a central air package that includes two 300w solar panels to supplement the power consumption of the AC.

And because the new A/Cs are more efficient, they require less power than the older units (Obviously)


Good to know, 5200btu + inverter + 600w of solar = A/C during the day.

 

Any of the box stores have any solar/battery a/c s on display.

 

I am trying to work out how that last resort AC room comes in at $1000.

$100 for a small AC unit. $100 for Charger Inverter UPS power module. $200 for a couple of Small Deep Cycle batteries. $600 for solar cells and since $3 a watt is a good price you would be lucky to get 200 watts.

What have I got wrong or is that enough for an emergency to give you a few degrees of cooling?
