Considering a TTL gate that is Open Collector...
What is missing in the circuitry of the gate?

How does the operation of an asynchronous output differ from that of a synchronous output?

1. the positive side npn is missing (or a pull-up resistor, in unbuffered gates, i don't remember).

2. in a communication bus? asynchronous mode always had start and stop marks (bits) in the data (bits), while the synchronous mode should have another line contains the clock of the data transmitted.
