Hey all,
I purchased a workshop from a lighting manufacturer and ended up with a lot of equipment. Can someone help me figure out what the item I attached is and is it worth anything?
It looks like an ac to dc converter of sorts.. thanks

It that an AC power cord coming out or it? From the markings, it appears to be a variable DC power supply.

A variac in a box- with unknown circuitry.
That was my first thought too, but the box is labeled DC... So, maybe, it is just the dial from a Variac or a Variac followed by rectification with or without an additional step-up transformer since the box also says 500 VDC..

We need to see the inside of the box,

Yup my first thought was strange looking variac. Don't know if the cordset is a wall plug for 120V or... But clearly marked in "magic marker" DC. Would be nice to have a peek inside. As to value, probably worth something to somebody but not many folks using 500VDC.

How is that assumed “power cord” terminated?

Can you power it with fused 12VAC and measure the output at various settings? Then, in the absence of sparks and magic smoke, try 120VAC?

Why can’t you see inside? Or am I misinterpreting you’re contents!

Of course, I assuming that you have a voltmeter.

I would say that it is a variable DC supply with a Variac as the control. We used something similar to power DC electric clutches in machine tools for testing.
