Externet, I had considered double sided tape (not the foam sort as that would be too thick) but I know from my experience sticking things to the sacrificial MDF on my router that it does not part cleanly.

There is medical, masking and painter tapes with weak adhesive, claiming to leave no residue. Pissed off when bought that wrong masking tape that barely adhered. Perhaps can be of help for your application...

"Cleanly removable" can be quite a problem with wood due to porosity.

There are putty-like adhesives that can be found in Canada & the US in crafts supply stores and many stationery stores. Some names:
Scotch Mounting Putty
Loctite Fun-Tak
Elmer's Tac N Stik
These have moderate holding strength and will remove cleanly from wood and paper if they haven't been in place for too long (weeks is probably OK).

Old fashioned rubber cement might be satisfactory.

You originally said, "bare wood" and that you may remove the wires at a later date. If you plan on putting a finish on the wood at that later date, you may want to put a finish on the wood before putting any of the things that have been talked about on it. The stuff like Goop and silicone glue will not take finish even paint very well. And the others won't allow stain to soak into the wood and will leave a unstained area where the glue was.

I don't expect to be applying any finish other than nice fine sandpaper.

I don't know how easy it is to remove but you might consider a high viscosity version of "Super Glue". It is available here at hobby stores -- I don't know the brand name. You might need an accelerator to make it work well. (I have seen it used on balsa wood.)

The industrial version:
Loctite 382 Tak Pak is a high viscosity, room temperature curing cyanoacrylate adhesive formulated for electronic applications including wire tacking...
