There is no difference between EM and mechanical waves in this regard. The "losing of group metadata" happens with EM waves, too. FM radio is an EM wave; to keep the channels separable, they are partitioned into distinct bandwidths (which we tune to with our FM receivers).This is why we need to discuss EM waves in my estimation.
