Flyback/freewheeling diode?

Another question.. sorry guys.

I've purchased a 24v 6a LED power supply - I'm hoping to use it for testing some 24v 36W electromagnetic coils in safety brakes.

I'm going to use a 1N4007 as the flyback diode but wondered if it was ok to be at the supply output terminals or does it need to be as near to the coil as possible?

Also, there is no switch here. It will be switched at the AC side and both coil wires will already be attached when powered on. The more I think and look online at flyback diode arrangements, the more I see my diode at the wrong side of the parallel arrangement it has with the coil.
