I was hoping my thread would not be misunderstood but again I failed. The whole point of my post was to criticize your meritless comments.
And you couldn't be bothered to utilize the same tactics that you criticized me for not using.

Got your poking stick out this morning?
Invalid argument: "Gopher claimed he would never criticize anybody."

I like the educational content from both of you. I wouldn't bother correcting a sentence that I disagree with out of a large paragraph of interesting stuff. Don't let this degrade into something personal.
Well arguably it already has since someone is already being quite uncivil and hurling personal insults. But I will try not to respond in kind, or at least remain mild about it.

In my book, a personal insult is something like Chevy Chase coined, "Jane, you ignorant slut." On the other hands I my view of the sentence, "you are sounding like an uninformed ass" is a mere warning that you are presenting yourself as an ass would. Totally different from my perspective. If you think nudging people behaving badly (as I interpreted you to be acting toward the Amish), I let them know so they can educate themselves and maybe form a different view of the situation.

If, on the other hand, you think it was a personal insult, then I will have to change my own frame of reference and really take the opportunity to sling one if I am perceived to be doing it anyhow.

Why do I have the feeling that if I were to ever tell you that you were acting like an ass you would come unglued?

I still find it interesting (and informative, but not surprising) that in the same post that you advise someone how to better phrase things, you don't feel any compunction to follow your own advice.

As one who fears the Wrath of Bahn, I watched very carefully to see that you didn't call him an ass, just pointed out that he was acting like one.

Because your meds haven't kicked in yet?

What is there to fear?
Several thousand words, even if it takes weeks, explaining why people in trades, professions, religions, or arts aren't doing it right? The well known and depressing fact that you will never quit until you believe you won? The fact that you're a Moderator now, so my Kryptonite doesn't work on you?

Some days, you seem entirely reasonable. Some days you don't. Most of what I have learned from you is not to get involved.
I broke that rule today, and here I am, explaining myself again.
Sometimes you aren't right. Pointing that out inevitably leads to a huge defensive dissertation. On a bad day, it results in insults. That is an experience I find distasteful.

In conclusion: Thanks for presenting the ignorant point of view about the Amish. I pretty much shared that ignorance until Gopher pointed out the flaws. Being from Pennsylvania, he has an advantage in this field of knowledge. Thanks to both of you for an interesting conversation. No thanks for the sniping at each other.

The only point that I'll take issue with is the implication that you have something extra to fear now that I am a moderator, the rest I will leave as a statement of your point of view. Any Kryptonite you had before is every bit as effective now as it was then. I go to great lengths never to use that position for anything remotely personal -- in fact I make a point of NOT taking moderating actions on anything that I am involved in and refer it to the rest of the mods and/or recuse myself from internal mod discussions. If you ever believe that I have abused my mod privileges, I strongly encourage you to either report it (which all mods, including myself, will see) or PM it to whatever members of the moderating staff you believe will hear it fairly.

A circle of 7 billion people, noming on 1 light year of ice cream. I estimate we will need more people!
--Emphasis added--
Say what!? That's only 100 duodecillion kilograms per person! -- And to think that (lo these long years) I've been suffering under the misapprehension that you Texans had hardy appetites!? -- Another illusion shattered!:(:(:(

As the ice cream is consumed the volume gets smaller but the spherical shell of people gets denser as the people get larger. At what point does the process stall because all of these horrendously morbidly obese folk are jammed together too tightly to continue consuming ice cream? :D

I'm not so worried about the obese people surrounding me. I would be more worried about a the various digestive co-products excreted nearby that a cubic light year of ice cream would attract.

Also, one doesn't need to be an expert in physics to esteem that a cubic year of ice cream would quickly collapse on itself, reach a critical density, and then become the sweetest singularity in the universe...
