For a technical explanation as to why there MUST be a detectable ellectromagnetic field related to the device, start with the data rate of 2.5 gigahertz. Now understand that the signal is an electrical voltage that is reversing itself at that rate. Communication theory tels us that to send data over a wire there must be enough current flowing in that wire to change the voltage at the far end of the wire. (calculating the exact voltage to provide numbers gets tedious here, so just trust that the current is not zero.
Basic electrical theory tells us that a changing electrical current will produce a changing magnetic field, and the fact is that a magnetic field will pass right thru most materials. That includes most of the materials that the places we live in are built of. BUT if you live in a steel hulled ship or submarine then they will not pass thru them.
