When I was still in elementary school our house converted to 220 volts power lines. The old guy electrician showed me how to install a ground rod.

1: Poke a hole with the tip of the rod.
2: Pour water in the hole.
3: Pump the rod up and down adding more water.
4: Clamp a "Vise-Grip" to the end of the rod so it doesn't get sucked to the center of the earth.

Amazing hydraulic effect.

The water with all the dirt and ionizing effects will change the local resistance.
