I have been messing around with the Picmicro's for about 20yrs now and only come across One project or suggestion on using the Micro processor supervisory reset IC, (DS1233)?
Is it overlooked? or just considered not necessary anymore?

There is a wide variety of packages and functionality to choose from. Like many design problems it would help if you could articulate your requirements.
Read the question, he doesn't have a "requirement". He simply saw one in an old design and asked if supervisor chips in old designs are no longer needed in modern PIC (newer than 16c84 chips).

I had been looking at bringing an older design up to scratch and modernize it a little, it was just out of interest I mentioned their insistence on the DS1233.
I had never come across it before.
I am upgrading the original to a 18F series.

Well, the PIC series usually provides many of the same things as a supervisory circuit, so I might hesitate to incur the extra expense, unless you can convince yourself that it provides a functionality the basic processor does not. Make the argument and we'll shoot holes in it if possible.
