the cable of my snes control is dry and hardened is it possible to recover this rubberized cable?

The most common reason for cable to become stiff and "dry" is the evaporation of phthalates, an additive use to soften plastics and do not chemically bind with the plastic, over time. As the phthalates go away, the plastic becomes less flexible. I have several rolls of 15 year old hook-up wire and its already getting stiff.
I doubt there there is any way to replace the lost phthalates.
