Been watching videos lately on this very subject and on how dogs protect (?) babies. In the last years, locally, there were way too many cases where dogs attacked kids (pitbull is the name that comes immediately from memory).

Additional comment, not intended to derail the thread but somewhat close to the point in question: it seems that in USA (not sure in other countries), it is common to allow dogs in a domestic/family environment to freely lick the face of babies (and adults).
Nothing that I ever seen at home or around here.

The "bad" dogs rotate between german shepard, doberman, rotweiler and the one we are currently on - pit bull. I find this article is pretty good on dog's perspective:
