I had long wondered how the Animals arrived at their version because it is clearly different than some of the earlier recordings, such as the Alan Lomax recording. But once I found the oldest known recording of the song, it's much closer to the Animals' version. Question answered.

 

Speaking of ZZ top, my favorite blues of theirs.

But Hank Jr does it better. He does a lot of blues old and new.
