Hey, I'm just having a ball* discovering that all the music I thought was "new" had been around in various forms for a very, very long time.

*Speaking of balls, here's a group that was heavily influenced by Chuck Berry and other popular Blues acts of the day:

I had long wondered how the Animals arrived at their version because it is clearly different than some of the earlier recordings, such as the Alan Lomax recording. But once I found the oldest known recording of the song, it's much closer to the Animals' version. Question answered.

...and according to the story here, the written lyrics predate even that earliest known recording.

Walking in Memphis
Marc Cohn
Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
W.C. Handy, won't you look down over me
Yeah I got a first class ticket
But I'm as blue as a boy can be
Then I'm walking in Memphis
Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel
