Q) is it possible that to demagnetize the magnet if we place it on the surface of the earth? if thn how? and if not then wt's the reason coz in the case of electricity we can discharge the charged body by makeing its connection with the ground.

plz explain.

Also i have heard that in order to demagnetized the magnet we have to place it in east-west direction. what's the concept behind that?

Magnetization is the result of orienting the magnetic moments of a magnetic material in a single direction. This is done with a direct current which creates a magnetic field.

To demagnetize you can heat the material which increases the thermal vibrations of the material and causes the magnetic moments to align randomly which destroys the magnetization. You may also be able to use an alternating current to scramble things up. I believe this technique is used for magnetic recording heads.

AFAIK the East-West story, is just a story.
