DC overcurrent protection

I am looking for a circuit that will turn off a DC power supply if a over current situation is detected coming from the load.
I tried a PTC but the trip point is to unreliable. A 4 Amp PTC will not completely block the DC until the current is 6 to 8 Amps.
A bit more accuracy is desirable.

Is there a IC that can do this and keep the parts count down? If there is a trip turning off the power source then back on would be the reset.

What is the minimum output voltage of the current you want to monitor?
How would the power supply be shut down?

Not quite clear on what is meant by "over current coming from the load". I am going to assume you mean if there is an low resistance load causing over current from the supply.
Simplest way is to use a fuse, probably fast blow or a circuit breaker.
