Hello,

Just to start, i would look up the curve for a typical PV array and go from there, The current and voltage characteristics will play a big role in the analysis.

With all the potential problems with the power grid in the USA i am tempted to construct my own array and get it working to charge batteries such for phones and tablets.

A free Matlab like software program like Scilab might be a good place to start.

The graphics are pretty simple and even a slow PC is more than up to doing the calculations.

Oh wait....did you mean you want to design a device that will emulate a solar panel, without actually being a solar panel?
