Most auto battery cable wire is about 4 awg copper stranded. I f someone used a piece of extension wire to lengthen
the run and it was 6 ga copper stranded but less strands and slightly bigger strands....would that present a real problem?
The 6 ga would be the piece that was connected to the battery..

4 gauge wire is rated up to 135A of load current. 6 gauge wire (regardless of strand size and number) is rated for 101A. So it’s not safe to substitute for 4g wire.

 

Not to mention that for 12V lengthening the wire can derate it's ampacity very quickly.

 

It will more then likely get hot not a good ideal.
just like jump starting a car them cheap jumper cables get hot waste power.
You need a good old big set welding cable size LOL
If its 4 gauge use 2 gauge to make it longer.

House hold wire is not meant to be used on vehicles, regardless of gauge. It is far too stiff, and neither heat or oil resistant. That being said, if you are in a jungle or desert, with no other resources, it can be used.

By the same token neither is welding lead wire. The smaller strands are too fragile for the constant vibration of automotive use. It does make great jumper cables though.
