Coordinates on a GPS receiver...

Hi. Never had one, never played with one, and will have to buy one.
But I have seen the screen showing a bird's view of the road.
Can longitude and latitude display be selected instead of graphic maps ?

Question 2 :
Inside the GPS gadget, there is a chipset for receiving the satellite, looks like

If I replace the chip with a Galileo enabled newer one, should it work ?

Some allow custom map fields for longitude and latitude display as an overlay. RTFM.

2# Unlikely to work with a different chip unless that units firmware already knows how to handle that chip.

Once the coordinates are known, the rest of what is displayed is software, and that depends on the specific device and the software it's running. I would be surprised to find any GPS device one that won't give your current coordinates if you want them. The fancy stuff it does with map views, points of interest and so on, is specific to the software the device can run.

Thanks. I learned an (automotive Garmin) user can enter a destination location as coordinates, but have not seen clues on how the user can read current locations in coordinates -latitude, longitude, altitude-

If someone knows an interface to display NMEA on a composite input display, please let me know.

I have several GPS devices. All Garmin. My car GPS only displays the position on the map. No latitude or longitude. I assume that is because it is a dumbed down version and most people that use it will have no idea what latitude and longitude is. I have two other mapping GPS devices. I I used for sailing and the other I used for bicycle touring. Both can display the position as well as the map. I also have an old GPS 12 that displays only latitude and longitude. and I have a hockey puck Garmin that connects to the USB port of a laptop. It will display whatever the software is capable.

Also I have software that can talk to any Garmin GPS from a PC. It is only the software to interface to the device. You would need to write your own UI.

PM me if interested. There is also open source software out there if you look.

Thank you, spinnaker (that was my position racing 'Lightning' class boats before the belly grew)
"Dumbed down" ...Nicely said.
Let me first decide and buy whatever I end with, the final wish is something that can receive Galileo, Glonass and GPS, preferably a receiver module. But I have to learn more.
I believe a Galileo enabled receiver module/chip responds to the same commands GPS does, has same pinout, allowing transplant to a plain unit that displays coordinates, as for marine use. Do not care about maps/charts.
Writing a program is not in my skills.

Great, Alec_t.
Downloaded the nautical one to an unused humble Android phone; very happy with it. In my poor skills, I was able to select an overseas location I was after. The compass is not responding well, but perhaps the phone does not have all the needed hardware built-in.

There is nothing like learning what has been there at reach. You let be light there ! Thanks !

Good. It was an app found at random, not one I've tried. I see you have to put up with ads, though :) .
The compass is not responding well
The phone probably includes the necessary magnetometer (compass). Is the phone inserted in an after-market case? Cases often have a magnetic catch which will screw up compass readings. I have the same problem with my tablet.

Seems all GNSS receivers have 'the secret' which solves my quest. Now I have to find if the green bars above correspond only to GPS, and there is other hidden sets of bars for Glonass, and another for Galileo
You don't see Glonass or Galileo in the U.S. for a simple reason .... http://www.insidegnss.com/node/4334

A rule largely aimed at opening trade in telecommunication services will require Russia and other international providers of GNSS services to apply for authorization before their navigation signals can be legally used in the United States, a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) official has told GPS experts on the Space-based Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) Advisory Board.

Controversial... United States floods all the countries of the planet with their GPS radio signals, but unwilling to accept foreign signals from being received in U.S.

The U.S. FCC believes they can police/rule the planet spectrum. If you buy a GPS GNSS receiver in U.S, you can use it in -say Bolivia- but a Russian signal cannot be used in U.S.
So I buy a Glonass receiving unit in Russia, forbidded to use in U.S. Seems like someone does not grab the concept of "Global" in GNSS. So my boat should anchor or turn off the receiver before reaching U.S. waters or risk either breaking a law or navigate risking safety.

Now I have to find out if buying a chinese GNSS receiver with 4 constellations, I cannot use it here. But Trimble is a US brand, and features Glonass, (registered).

Stop complaining. Buy your own island, launch and maintain your your own satellites in orbit. You can do whatever you want. Or just move to Russia and you will get GNSS no problem.

Why do you even care if you get GNSS in the US or not when the US system works perfectly fine?

US GPS is not a civilian use system. At any moment they could secure it giving you a degraded accuracy. The same applies to all other GPS systems.

Your phone probably already is tracking other GPS systems.
