Coordinates on a GPS receiver...

I assume that is because it is a dumbed down version and most people that use it will have no idea what latitude and longitude is.
My Subaru's nav system doesn't show coordinates unless you dig in through a few screens. I can easily imagine that other systems didn't bother to enable this for the user.

Compare that application to geocaching. Trying to do that sport without coordinates would be silly.

@Externet, some of the geocaching apps may interest you. They have specialized navigation information such as distance and heading, the ability to add coordinates as waypoints, and all sorts of other navigation tools.

I like this app, too. I think there's an Android version.

US GPS is not a civilian use system. At any moment they could secure it giving you a degraded accuracy. The same applies to all other GPS systems.

Your phone probably already is tracking other GPS systems.

Like I said. Launch your own system. ;)

As far as I know you never get the same accuracy as the military. I have never had an issue with accuracy for both land and marine use. It has always been accurate enough for my needs and has saved my bacon more than once. But I have never used GPS as my primary navigation method. I always plotted by course and kept track of heading and speed and used aides to navtigation. But the GPS can be a real comfort in a driving rain when no aides to navigation can be seen except in the last 50ft of their position.
