Converting automotive indicator signal to v DC

Well. That is an interesting reply, as you cannot have seen my vehicle.
I have checked the circuit in my vehicle and it goes 12V to the flasher unit, up to the indicator switch, which switched the signal to either the left hand or right hand indicator lights.
I am sorry for your confusion, but my facts are correct :p.
I need to turn on an external video camera (think reversing camera system) when either the LH or RH indicators are energised. There is a camera on either side of the vehicle.
If the camera system is for a competition car then one easy option is a set of small switches driven by the T/S lever, or possibly a link from the lever. Weight could be very small. Or even reed switches attached inside the T/S switch housing, with small wires to outside the housing. Or, if that is too complex, a latching relay triggered by the first flash, keeping the camera on until some external shutoff trigger is given. That could be very simple to implement, it could be done with small lightweight relays. and the release could even be a foot-button. And just a bit of interlock to release one when the other side was triggered. All relay logic, no complex electronics except possibly a couple diodes.

You could eliminate the original flasher relay sending B+ to the turn switch and use a flasher on the ground side of each lamp.
Adding a flasher to the ground side of each of the turn signal lights would be a very large task, and if the bulbs also include the running/parking light filament then it would not be a workable solution. Each light in most cars has it's own ground connection.
Besides that, altering an automotive wiring harness in the under-dash area is a huge pain.

The TS could tap into the front TS lamp lines with a diode and use that to trigger a small time delay relay set to stay on for a few seconds. that relay could then power the camera, which would switch off after the TS was cancelled and the delay timed out. P&B make the relay that I am thinking about. Probably Newark and Digikey carry that part still.

First, I've not heard of using blinkers in a race. But I know I don't know everything. If you need to see who's there then just put small cameras and small screens inside the car. Let it be on all the time. If you need to sweep left or right - you just look at your monitors. No need to rebuild a circuit.

I'm assuming this isn't for a dash cam type of setup.

Back at posts #1 and #7 we hear that it is a "road/race" car, and elsewhere the model is mentioned. It is one of those with the decorative rear window that does not provide a good view. Now my guess is that the display is one that is shared with other functions and in those cars there is no room for additional screens of a useful size. It is not a huge SUV or luxury vehicle. Not everybody drives a riverboat or a barge. So that is why a number of the suggestions will simply not work.

I believe reference to road/race is what, I as a kid, called road and track. The car met all the requirements to be on any state road but on weekends we took our cars to the local tracks and raced them. Our term for the street was street legal. The vehicle met all state inspection criteria but was also raced.

Just remembered, we also used Street / Strip.

That is what I have suggested a couple of times, but in different words. The small P&B time delay relays could certainly work for that application.

I could see replacing the side mirrors with cameras for a more aerodynamic slip-stream through the air. My cars have proximity warning systems that give me a beep if I try to take an occupied lane. Would something like that work?

I can certainly see a large benefit with some camera installations in some driving situations. But really, not a lot of people drive that hard to have a serious need for that. BUT if you are trying to do 60MPH through THE LOOP in Chicago at 4PM on a Friday they would be rather handy. AND they would be useful on the expressways here in the Detroit area.

MisterBill2's comment reminded me of a time I once spent on the Long Island Expressway at 4PM on a weekday. 70 MPH bumper to bumper. IF you managed to change lanes you were lucky; and blinkers were for bluffing. If you wanted the right lane you put your left signal on. The guy on the right didn't guard his tiny space so jealously that you'd be able to slip in. You'd get the one finger salute. I'd return a whole hand up - a bouquet of fingers. Glad I had to do that only once. And that was back in the 80's.

Well .....Update!

It works. Or, at least the bits I have been able to try work :). The first timer relays didn't work as they were delay off and needed a constant supply voltage rather than a pulse. The second set worked brilliantly on lowest setting. On triggering from the flasher signal, there is a 0.5sec delay before the overtaking camera is activated and about a 1 sec delay after the flasher is turned off, before the camera reverts to the rear camera.
I will post pics and a short video in due course. I am waiting for a Molex 2081 housing and two cameras for final fit, but I am well chuffed with it so far. :D

OK, it seems that I needed to state that the timer relay needed to be wired to latch on when the first turn signal pulse arrived. Then it will keep being reset with each pulse, and so it would not time out until the pulses stopped arriving to reset it. Sorry about forgetting to mention that. It may have been one of my 4AM postings.
