Convert Three Phase Heater to Single Phase?

Hello,

I recently won at auction a heater that was described as single phase but it turns out to be 3 phase.

I was wondering if there was a way to covert this to single phase?

Thanks for your help!

You just wire the three elements in parallel it shows 230v 3 ph so if you wire it with a suitable 240v DP breaker it should work, that is how residential furnaces operate, although they tend to switch each bank in sequentially.

Ok, that's what I initially thought and did, but the elements weren't heating up much. I ran off a 50a DP breaker but only warmed the elements up a bit. Should I go bigger?

If your supply is 230V, then yes you rewire the elements all in parallel across the Phase and Neutral.
That is if the OP is in UK, in N.A. it will be across 240v L1 & L2.
If you wired across N and L1 in N.A. then they won't get that hot.
OP: What is the value of the fuses?
The breaker size won't increase the current.

I'm just using a standard DP breaker. If this was in a normal industrial shop I think that's what the schematic is saying to run it off of. Is that what you are asking? Sorry it's been a few years...

See post #5.
What is the existing fuse value?

Are you referring to the fused disconnect switch in the schematic? If this was in a normal industrial shop I think that's what the schematic is saying it should run off of. Is that what you are asking? Sorry it's been a few years...

Here's a question. I was doing some research on single phase heaters and looking at their schematics. None of them have the contactor T1-T3 between the terminal block and elements. Would that being causing unnecessary resistance?

Not normally, unless the contacts are bad, and it would be unusual for that to be all three, if you are using the existing contactor, have you paralleled up the input terminals and used each of the 3ph contacts to switch each element on independent contacts?

No I'm not using each contactor. I've paralleled from the terminal block to the contactor, removing L2 and T2.
