Making a full wave rectifier from SCRs doesn't make much sense, unless one is trying to control the bridge o/p power with an i/p signal. Are you sure you understood the assignment correctly?
If you are making a high-current regulated power supply with a variable voltage output, it is good practise to have a preregulator ahead of the output regulator. Using the SCR's to keep voltage on the filters about 2 volts above the regulated output means the passers can run close to saturation and avoid ohmic heating.
