Connected RFID reader

I want to build a RFID reader that have internet connection. I thought about using ID-12LA, Arduino Nano and ESP8266, but ideally the project should have the smallest possible size, so my question is: anyone knows how to achieve the same (or almost the same) result using smaller components? What would you recommend?
