Without a lens all the cells get light from all the objects in front of the chip, so you get more or less the same exposure on all of them, so you will get a unifromly grey output.
Just like when you expose a classic camera film to light.
Have you ever seen a camera without a lens? I have not, because that simply doesn´t work.
Well you can also use a pinhole to get an image on the sensor and technically it isn´t a lens. But I am not sure if that is what your tutor had in mind.
